Oscar

Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Oscar.  He is 19 months old and is a beautiful Terrier Mix of some sort. He weighs about 60lbs and has long legs.   He and his siblings were found as strays in a high kill shelter and were feral. Oscar arrived in Barks and Meows Rescue in October of 2019.  He was in a shelter with three other siblings and all of them had never know human touch.  They were 10 months old.  All the siblings found other Rescues and Oscar was brought into one of our foster homes with multiple dogs.  This was a necessity as we had to gain his trust.    We knew he would learn to trust his family from the other dogs in the home.  He made a significant amount of progress but only would leave his crate to go outside to relieve himself and to play with the dogs.  He still was nervous around the family.  When he is nervous, he just freezes.  His open-door crate was his safe spot.  Eventually, he moved to another one of our foster homes who have two dogs.  The family consists of two adults and three wonderful girls, 8 10  and 14.  He has been given so much exposure in this home to pique his interest outside of the crate. Here are the comments from his current foster home: He needs a home with another dog to help him with trust.  He is still very nervous in new situations.  No children or older children would be ideal.  Little kids are too fast for him.  He rides well in the war, walks well on a lead (though things can sometimes startle or scare him on walks).  The family chosen will have to understand that it will take him some time to warm up to his new situation.  He does not have an aggressive bone in his body.  He plays with the other two dogs in the home and greets me and my husband when we come home.  He is only in the crate when we are not home.  He is not destructive.  He sleeps on a dog bed near us at night.  He eats near his bed.  He does not have any commands but will back to someone he trusts at the dog park.  He jumps up on the couch and bed now but sleeps on a dog bed upstairs with us.  He is housebroken.  He is very good at the groomers. Oscar's new family must take him to Obedience classes from the get-go. This type of exposure will be good for him.  He is food motivated but only with high-value treats.  Cheese is a biggie.  This continued socialization and one on one time with a family member will speed up the bonding and trust process. Oscar is neutered, up to date with vaccines, 4 DX tested negative, on heartworm and flea/tick prevention. A fully fenced yard, another medium to large size socialized playful dog in the home and a Veterinarian History of Compliance is mandatory to apply for Oscar.   At this time, his home needs to have either no children or children 12 years and up.
